POH-GGZ

GP-MHP (General Practice – Mental Health Professional)

Why have you been referred?

The GP has referred you to the POH-GGZ – or in English the GP-MHP (General Practice – Mental Health Professional) – because you may be experiencing mental health challenges that could benefit from short-term guidance and support. A GP refers patients to the POH-GGZ when they show signs of mild to moderate mental health issues that don’t yet require specialized care. In some cases, the referral is made to allow for further assessment or to offer interim support while waiting for specialized treatment. If more intensive care is needed, the POH-GGZ will refer you accordingly.

Duration and frequency of appointments

  • First Appointment (Intake): 45 minutes to assess your concerns and discuss next steps.
  • Follow-Up Options:
    • Continued Care: If appropriate, follow-up sessions (30 minutes) will be scheduled every 3–4 weeks, up to a maximum of 10 sessions.
    • Referral: If specialized care is needed, the POH-GGZ will guide you through the referral process

What to expect?

The POH-GGZ provides an individually tailored treatment that incorporates elements of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and Mindfulness. Additional support may include online modules to reinforce techniques discussed in sessions.

Important notes:

  • Notes from your sessions will be added to your GP file.
  • No Diagnostics: The POH-GGZ does not conduct formal diagnostic assessments. If needed, they will refer you to a specialist.
  • No Medical Certificates: Per KNMG guidelines, the POH-GGZ cannot issue medical certificates.

Appointments with the GP and POH-GGZ are fully covered by basic Dutch health insurance. If you are referred to BGGZ or SGGZ, these services are also covered if the referred institution has a contract with your health insurance provider. Your deductible (eigen risico) will apply.
