HPV is a common group of viruses, with more than 100 different types. Some types are harmless and go away on their own, while others can cause serious health problems.
Certain high-risk types of HPV can cause:
Cervical cancer
Other genital cancers (vulva, vagina, penis, anus)
Throat and mouth cancers
Low-risk types can cause genital warts.
HPV infections are very common—most people will be exposed at some point in their lives. It is mainly spread through skin-to-skin contact during sexual activity.
